May their memories be for a blessing.
In Jewish tradition, remembering our loved ones is a sacred act — allowing their memories to inspire us by the good in their life, helping us to live more fully in our own days. Through acts of tzedakah, we endow immortality of memory and spirit upon our loved ones as we help others. It is customary in this regard to make a contribution to the synagogue.
Our custom at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue is to remember our loved ones with permanent bronze memorial plaques and in an annual memorial book. Each plaque’s memorial light, lit annually on the Yahrzeit and the four Yizkor services (Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, Shavuot), helps illuminate our sanctuary with the memory of your loved one.
And ahead of the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur, we fill the memorial book with the names of those who have departed their bodies, but whose souls remain, and place the book in our ark, where it will remain until the next Yom Kippur.
And if you would like to include names in this year’s memorial book, please complete this form before the deadline listed. To view a sample page, please click here. (Note: members who included names in the previous year’s Memorial Book receive mailings showing their previous listings for updating.)
