Beyond the horror, disgust, and vulnerability we feel in the aftermath of the recent terror attack, we affirm the values bringing us together: There has never been a city like ours, pulsating with human energy and dedicated to liberty, self-realization, and collective excellence. That so many of the victims were tourists, struck down in one of the most beautiful life-affirming parts of Manhattan, is tragic evidence of the magnetic worldwide appeal of our city.

We are determined to live our lives in that special New York way — vigilantly, but joyously, confidently, and faithfully. New York is exceptionally strong. The attack occurred within eyesight of Freedom Tower, the sparkling rebuilt testament to New York’s determination to live freely. We will not be intimidated.

Our hearts go out to the families of the victims. May they be comforted in the knowledge that an entire city, and so many good people everywhere, mourn with them. We pray for peace and understanding, and pledge to do our part in bringing about a better world.
