About “Church and State”
Three days before his bid for reelection, in the wake of a school shooting in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, a Republican U.S. senator makes an off-the-cuff comment to a blogger that gets leaked on “the Twitter,” calling into question the senator’s stance on guns and God. As his devoutly Christian wife and liberal Jewish campaign manager try to contain the damage, this look at how religion influences politics and how politics has become a religion is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking, and uplifting.

Jason Odell Williams is originally from Columbia, Maryland. He has been nominated for an Emmy Award, an Off-Broadway Alliance Best New Play Award and an L.A. Ovation Best Original Play Award. His plays “Church & State” and “Handle with Care” were both produced Off-Broadway and have collectively been produced over 100 times across the country. On television, Jason’s works have aired on National Geographic, the History Channel, Discovery, and Netflix. Jason is writing a musical about the Danish Jews who escaped to freedom in 1943 with his wife and long-time collaborator, Charlotte Cohn.

Charlotte Cohn was born in Denmark and raised in Israel where she served in the Israeli Army as a commanding officer. She was the lead producer of The NY Times critics’ pick “Handle With Care” and the award winning “Church & State,” both written by her husband, Jason Odell Williams. Directing highlights include “Best Friends” and “Church & State.” Acting highlights include “La Boheme” and “Coram Boy” on Broadway. Charlotte is an Ovation Award Winner and was nominated for the Bay Area Critics’ Circle Award. She is writing a musical about her father’s escape from Denmark to Sweden during WWII with her husband. For more please visit: www.charlottecohn.com
