The language of the ancient Israelites, Hebrew ceased to be spoken between 200β400 CE, in the aftermath of the Third Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire β but its use continued in Jewish literature and liturgy for centuries. Much like the miracle of the modern state of Israel, Hebrew is one of the only true examples of the revival of a dead language.
“By committing to improving your Hebrew, youβre investing in your entire Jewish life,” says Rabbi Sam Natov. “There’s perhaps no better way to create a connection the Jewish people, our history and our homeland than through our shared language.”
In that spirit, Stephen Wise Free Synagogue is proud to offer two Hebrew classes for adults that will focus on the basics and building up to conversational Hebrew. Our beginner classes are intended for learners with little or no experience with the language and our intermediate classes are appropriate for those who are continuing their Hebrew learning or who already know the aleph-bet and can βdecodeβ Hebrew words (read without full comprehension).***
These in-person classes are available for Stephen Wise Free Synagogue members only. Tuition for the full year, NovemberβMay, is $500 per person. Some need-based scholarships are available; please contact Rabbi Sam Natov to privately discuss your circumstances.
