Stephen Wise Free Synagogue celebrates 20 years of Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch’s leadership.
Since his arrival in 2004, Ammi has revitalized our historic congregation and articulated a clear vision for the future of American Judaism.
A fiery speaker and a brilliant scholar, Ammi is also a compassionate friend and a generous teacher.
Not since Rabbi Stephen S. Wise has there been an American Jewish leader as committed to Jewish peoplehood and the land of Israel.
Ammi’s message has echoed far beyond the synagogue’s walls, inspiring unconditional support for our homeland and guiding new generations with modern interpretations for ancient values and traditions.
We invite you to join us in honoring Ammi and supporting our community.

“We moved to Israel when I was 14 years old. We had spoken Hebrew at home, but it was my father’s Hebrew — heavily accented from his rabbinic studies — and my mother’s acquired Hebrew because she spent some years in Israel after the Holocaust.
“A year and a half after I arrived in Israel, I appeared on a radio show where panelists had to guess which one of us three children was the new immigrant. After half an hour of questioning us, none of them guessed it was me…”
