In the fall of 1938, Nazi loyalists burned 190 synagogues, destroyed 7,500 Jewish-owned shops, and sent some 30,000 German Jews to concentration camps.
Most of this violence took place across dozens of German cities on the night of Nov. 9, 1938 β Kristallnacht, or “Crystal Night,” named for the sparkling shards of broken glass that littered streets and sidewalks after the vandalism.
On the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, join Stephen Wise Free Synagogue for a special concert featuring European cantorial music, popular Israeli melodies, thoughtful readings, and a discussion contextualizing the modern pogrom carried out by Hamas against Israeli Jews. Performing and presenting will be our very own Cantor Dan Singer with Rabbi David Maxa, who will be joining remotely from Prague; German liturgical music expert Dr. Ralph Selig, who will accompany on the organ; and Holocaust survivor Dr. Carl Steeg, who will speak about his experience.
