Swiss-American Jewish composer Ernest Bloch’s “Avodath HaKodesh” (sacred service) sets the bar for composers aspiring to elevate the language and flow of a synagogue service to the realm of the concert stage. The hourlong Hebrew oratorio — the first and virtually the only one of its kind — combines Shabbat morning liturgy usually sung by a baritone with a choir and full orchestra.
