Shem Tov Award
In Jewish tradition, a shem tov, a good name, stands above all. Stephen Wise Free Synagogue bestows the Shem Tov Award for the boundless humanity of the honorees.
DR. STEPHAN AND SUSAN LYNN have called Stephen Wise home for nearly 50 years. Deeply committed to the synagogue, they both served on the board of trustees, where as president, Steve led the charge to revitalize our congregation. A leader in the emerging specialty of emergency medicine, Steve was a primary member of Columbia University’s faculty and headed the emergency rooms at Roosevelt and St. Luke’s hospitals, where Susan managed the clinical and research laboratories. Despite sharing an employer, sending their daughters to our Religious School, and Susan’s leadership of the Women’s Organization, it was the choir and their commitment to social action that brought them together. They celebrated their 2002 wedding in our sanctuary.
SAL LIFRIERI is Stephen Wise’s trusted security advisor. Whether behind the scenes or in front of our building for the High Holy Days, Sal designs and assesses the systems that keep our congregation safe. The president of Protective Countermeasures Inc., he is an internationally recognized security and terrorism expert who has provided training and advisory services to major entertainment organizations, educational institutions, Fortune 500 companies and high-profile individuals. A decorated veteran of the NYPD and member of its elite Hostage Negotiation Team, Sal has held leadership positions at New York City’s Municipal Security Section and the Office of Emergency Management. Sal has been recognized by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and advocates for those in need including veterans and the victims of crime.
